Selecting and improving your primary character type will drive your acting career to new heights. Acting is a tough business to get into and to succeed you have to do what other actors are unwilling to do. One argument for the strife is that there are some many people jockeying for the limited amount of roles that exist. In order to succeed you have to set yourself ahead of other actors. You have to decide to be “The One” the casting directors are waiting on. There are several ways to set yourself apart from the competition although defining and perfecting your primary character type is one of the most beneficial. If you’re new to acting you may not know what your primary character type is or how to utilize it to give you favor over the competition. Your primary character type is basically the primary character that you would like to be cast for. It’s the character type that you determine to and master , and master , spotlight on . It will sooner or later become your personal brand. Also deciding on your primary type tightens your character focus, puts you at the highest point of the Casting Director’s list and gets you cast for more jobs. Have you ever heard the remark “Your reputation precedes you?” When your reputation precedes you it means that Casting Directors already know about you. They know what you are capable of; they know what character type you are plugged into and they actually look for you for particular jobs. Becoming aware about your strengths and weaknesses and learning which role best focus on your strengths will save you years of despair as an actor. Furthermore, because of your narrow focus you will be able to apply your time more productively and master a character type which will ultimately augment the other facets of your acting career. Mastering your primary character type will get you more roles, make you more money, and get you more celebrity. Then down the road after you have established some initial success you can shift that success into new acting opportunities. Some individuals believe that focusing on your primary character type will pigeonhole you and make it hard to get cast for different kinds of roles. As an actor I know you pride yourself on the many different roles you can play. Having a diversified set of roles you can play is beneficial but it’s more important to be very good at one when you’re beginning your career. Your familiarity of that one role will keep food on the table and transmit into new opportunities for you that allow you to lengthen your acting muscles. Even though many actors believe it’s a faulty career choice to define and master a primary character type, the opposite is true. Getting clear about the role that best agrees with you at this point in your acting career is a professional avenue to acting and it will move your career along and help you get jobs in more gainful roles in the future. Making the choice to discover and master your primary character type is one of the best things you can do for your acting career. As you know, acting can be a rough business because there are flocks of actors competing for the same roles. One way to set yourself apart from the crowd is to reveal your type or personal brand. Taking this important step and identifying your type will help Casting Directors get to know you better and they will start to comb the masses of actors for you for opportunities that match your brand . Eventually you will be able to change your success into more rewarding acting roles. Take the time to uncover and master your primary character type. You will be delighted you did.
